8-Step Nighttime Skin Care Routine
Beauty sleep is no myth. While you sleep, your skin is working extra hard to repair and regenerate from the day just gone – that's why your night time skin care routine is mega important. Products are able to better penetrate when you're not wearing makeup while you sleep and the skin can breathe.
Your evening routine should be focused on prevention and correction. It’s also the most effective time to introduce more active ingredients and treatments such as retinol.
Below, I broke down the correct order to apply your skincare products. You don’t need an eight step skincare routine. Most faces do far better with fewer products, so if you’re just starting out, keep it simple: cleanser, toner, moisturizer.
Cleanser
First of all, for ingredients to absorb properly, you need clean skin that’s totally free of oil and grime. You need double cleanse away the day. This two-stage face washing process starts with a gentle makeup remover, followed by a second wash, to deep clean skin. No matter your skin type, choose a gentle cleanser that won't strip your skin of natural oil and disrupt your skin's microbiome.
Toner
After cleansing, tap your toner over your clean, dry skin. Delicate tonic completes the process of removing makeup and preparing the skin for further care. Toner also restores your skin's pH level, smooths skin by refining rough patches and improves skin tone.
Eye Cream
Soothe tired eyes with a night eye cream and make sure to apply them before you slather on your creams and oils. Adding an eye cream to your nighttime skincare routine not only relieves the symptoms of tired eyes, it helps protect and replenish the delicate skin around the eyes too.
Retinol/Antioxidant Serum
Serums are totally optional, they’re often a good first step in leveling up your skincare routine and boosting your skin health. While daytime serums hydrate and protect, the purpose of a nighttime serum is to resurface and repair.
The best night serums usually feature at least one acid. The most common are hyaluronic, lactic, salicylic and glycolic or even a blend of all four. If you can tolerate retinol, look for a night serum with the trusted anti-aging ingredient to help tackle wrinkles and fine lines. Retinol serum considered to be the gold standard for its anti-aging and skin clearing benefits. It helps accelerate skin renewal, enhance collagen production and reduce the appearance of aging, uneven texture and age spots.
Moisturizer
Your skin goes into repair mode at night, working extra hard to fix damage and boost regeneration. Your night moisturizer should be filled with all the things your body naturally produces and can use more of, like hyaluronic acid, lipids, and proteins. You can also use night cream that contains retinoids that tend to be gentler, especially on sensitive skin. They promise not only to moisturize skin during sleep, but trigger collagen production and cellular exfoliation, which means they’ll also fade dark spots, smooth scars, clear pores, prevent breakouts, and brighten skin. Basically, retinoids are the closest thing to magic that dermatologists have.
Spot Treatments
Spot treatments are usually used at bedtime because that’s when your body is working hardest to repair itself. But if you’ve already used an acne-fighting toner and/or you’re planning to layer on a retinol, try spot-treating in the morning instead, so you don’t irritate your skin with too much at once. Spot treatment is most effective when used as soon as blemishes or pimples appear.
Face Oil
To regenerate and rejuvenate your skin apply face oil as the last step of your nighttime skin care routine. Face oils are occlusive, meaning they seal in all the ingredients and moisture you just applied to your face to keep them from evaporating as quickly, while keeping toxins and other bad stuff out. Oils are the ideal antidote to dry, flaky skin and rough, rosy cheeks — and they can be much more effective at moisturizing than your standard over-the-counter lotions and creams can. They also can reduce your wrinkles, shrink enlarged pores, can calm down rashes and they're great for banishing zits.
Lip Mask
Lip masks can be very effective to heal the our delicate lips overnight. For an overnight lip treatment, mix a small amount of olive oil and honey together. Honey has been proven to have antibacterial and wound-healing properties, and the olive oil will help to moisturize. Apply the mixture to your lips before you go to bed, and your lips will be soft and smooth in the morning.
